X Alt Text Generator - Chrome Extension

X Alt Text Generator is a Chrome extension that helps you add accurate, descriptive alt text to images you post on X (formerly Twitter). Instead of writing image descriptions manually every time, the extension uses the OpenAI Vision API (gpt-4-vision-preview) to generate suggested alternative text based on the image you uploaded. This makes it easier to improve accessibility for people who use screen readers, and it also helps ensure your posts include meaningful descriptions.

The workflow is designed to fit naturally into X’s posting interface. After you upload an image to a post and open X’s “Edit image description” screen, the extension inserts a new button labeled “Generate alt text ?”. Clicking that button sends the image to the OpenAI Vision API, receives a generated description, and automatically inserts the result into the alt text field so you can review and publish. You stay in control: you can edit the generated text before saving, ensuring the final description matches your intent, tone, and any important context.

To get started, install the extension and add your OpenAI API key in the extension’s options. Once configured, the extension can generate alt text whenever you add an image and open the image description editor in X.
